How many hedge funds are there?

As of 15 August 2026 our complete list includes 5,110 hedge fund managers. This is a file count, not a regulator census.

There is no single official census of every hedge fund on earth. Different files count different things: registered advisers, funds vs firms, live vs closed, hedge fund only vs all alternatives.

The number on this site is simpler. As of 15 August 2026, the Hedge Fund Contacts file includes 5,110 hedge fund managers. That is a count of rows in our current workbook whose firm type is hedge fund. It is our file, not a regulator census, and it will change when the list is refreshed.

The coverage page is the source of record for this number and the geography tables below. If the count moves, that page gets the new as-of date first.

What this number is not

Not the number of public fund profile pages. The profiles are a smaller archive. Coverage explains the split.
Not PE, VC, or other firm types that may sit in the research workbook. Those rows are excluded.
Not a count of individual funds under each manager.
Not a permanent figure. When the file refreshes, 5,110 and the as-of date will move together.
